Two days ago, on May 26, Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed Senate Bill 334 into law, banning Glock and Glock-style handguns.

On January 1, 2027, the most common handgun platform in America becomes illegal to sell, purchase, or transfer in the state.

SB 334 doesn’t just say “Glock.” It bans every semiautomatic pistol built around a cruciform trigger bar, the design at the heart of every Glock, the Palmetto State Armory Dagger, the Ruger RXM, Shadow Systems, and nearly every Glock-style pistol on the market.

That’s roughly 65% of the U.S. handgun market.

The state’s argument is that these pistols can be illegally modified into machine guns. It’s already a felony under federal law to possess those conversion devices, and also illegal under Maryland law. Two statutes already punish the crime. SB 334 punishes the platform – and all of us.

Before the ink on the Gov. Moore’s signature was dry, the Second Amendment Foundation filed NRA v. Moore in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland on behalf of our members across the state.

The case is straightforward. In District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court held that arms “in common use” cannot be banned. Bruen sharpened that test in 2022. Glocks are most certainly in common use. Between 40% and 65% of U.S. law enforcement agencies issue them to their officers. Roughly 65% of the civilian handgun market is based on the same design. That is the textbook definition of common use.

If Maryland’s ban stands, every state in the country gets a blueprint: ban the most popular handgun in America without ever using the word Glock. If we strike it down, that blueprint dies in Maryland.
