Stay Safe In Cold Temperatures

Dangerously cold temperatures are expected this weekend across the state. If you head out for some winter recreation, check the forecast first – conditions can change quickly. Dress in layers, take a cell phone if available, and make sure someone knows where you are and when you are expected to return.
Also, remember that no ice is safe ice, even if it looks solid or is covered in several inches of snow. There can be cracks and changes in the ice thickness that you won’t see until it’s too late.
Visit the DNR’s Ice Safety webpage for more information on staying safe on the ice.

Magazine Highlights Conservation Congress
The annual Spring Hearings process from the Wisconsin Conservation Congress allows the public to be involved and weigh in on a variety of conservation issues in the state by submitting ideas for proposed resolutions and then voting on the items that end up on the ballot. Through Feb. 9, individuals may submit up to two proposals via the 2026 Citizen Resolution Submittal Form, which includes rules for submissions. Voting on the resolutions that meet the criteria will take place in early April.
It’s one of the biggest ways the Wisconsin Conservation Congress — authorized by state statute to advise the Natural Resources Board and the DNR — goes about its important work. The latest issue of Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine has all you need to know about the WCC, which features elected delegates from all 72 Wisconsin counties. “Legacy and future of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress” highlights the history and current processes of the WCC and the vital role it plays in making sure residents’ voices are heard in natural resources policy and management.
The magazine also shines a spotlight on the WCC’s outreach effort for young people — the Youth Conservation Congress. Pick up the winter issue to learn how the “YCC helps shape the next generation of conservation” with activities including hunting and fishing outings, educational programs and career exploration.
Check out the winter digital edition online for these stories and more great content. There’s still time to get the winter issue when you subscribe today. Subscribe online or by phone at 1-800-678-9472 to get the print issue delivered for yourself or buy a gift subscription for friends and family.

Submit Nominations For 2025 Hunter And Archery Education Awards
Know someone (or a group) making a difference in our state as a hunter or archery education instructor? Consider nominating them for any of the 2025 Hunter Education Instructor of the Year, Hunter Education Group of the Year or Archery Education Instructor of the Year awards from the DNR.
Current hunter and archery education instructors and hunter education groups that have significantly advanced hunter safety on a voluntary basis through extraordinary service are eligible to be nominated.
Extraordinary service can take many forms, including recruiting new instructors, recruiting new students or hunters, increasing the volume of courses taught or involvement in other community activities related to hunter education.
To nominate an individual or group, download the nomination form on the DNR’s volunteer webpage and email the completed form to DNRLESafety@wisconsin.gov by Feb. 15, 2026. |
Register For A Women’s Learn To Snowmobile Event
Curious about snowmobiling, but unsure how to get started? Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) conservation wardens are hosting a free, woman-only Learn to Snowmobile event on Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. near Hurley in Iron County.
We’ll start by going over the basics of snowmobile operation and then head out for a slow-speed ride, with a break for lunch (at the participant’s cost).
This event is designed for beginners, so no prior experience is needed. Women can bring their own or borrowed sled or rent one from a local snowmobile dealer.
Spots are limited (max of 14 people), so register soon.
To register and learn more about the event, contact DNR Recreation Warden Robin Miller at Robin.Miller@wisconsin.gov.
