Jim and Cindy Carrell were friends to many people in the Denmark area and at the Maribel Sportsman’s Club.

Cindy passed first, and then Jim passed during COVID.

Jim was a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources hunter safety and bow hunter instructor for many years at the Maribel club. He never missed teaching a course, until some health issues came into play later in life.

The weatherproof bench purchased by the three children of Jim and Cindy Carrell in their memory. It is situated at Tuma Lake, seats four people and gives visitors a view of most of the lake.

One day while teasing Jim, Cindy said it was nice when he was away teaching and she wondered if I might be able to schedule a few more classes each year.

Wording on the plaque of a weatherproof bench placed by the Carrell family at Tuma Lake: 'For Jim and Cindy Carrell – Enjoy fishing today and echo their laughter, as you tease about, Luck vs. Skill.'

Tuma Lake, in northern Manitowoc County, was one of their favorite places to put the boat in the water and try for some panfish. It didn’t matter who caught the fish, there was always some bantering about whether that fish was caught by luck or skill.

Because that was their favorite lake, Jim and Cindy’s three children purchased a weatherproof bench in their memory. The bench was purchased about three years ago and cabled to a pole. Now, the Parks Department has cemented the bench permanently in place. It is positioned off to the side of the boat launch and looks out over Tuma Lake.

Mary and I went to take photos for this column, and she told me the way the bench is set, people can see most of the lake.

Glacial Lakes Conservancy offering native tree, shrub sale

Glacial Lakes Conservancy said its Spring Native Plant Sale was such a success it is offering a new native tree and shrub sale.

Not only can you purchase trees and shrubs for yourself, but there is also a new option to donate one to Glacial Lakes Conservancy to plant on one of its preserves.

Why plant in fall? Planting in the fall gives trees and shrubs an extra growing season before the stress of summer. The combination of cooler temperatures and fall rain allows trees to establish their roots, making it easier on them to adjust to extreme heat or drought in the summer.

Hosted by LaValley Home & Garden, proceeds benefit Glacial Lakes Conservancy. Order online at https://www.lavalleyhg.org/fundraiser. Pickup will be between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Oct. 17-18 at LaValley Home & Garden, 820 Madison Ave., Howards Grove.
