DNR Sport Fishing Report For 8-23-2018

Manitowoc Co.

  • Manitowoc Ramp – Anglers going out right now have mixed results. Some anglers will come in with 10 fish while the next boat will have only 2 two fish. Overall most anglers are coming in with fish. Rainbows are dominated the fish coming into the cleaning stations right now. The rainbows are being caught out in 150 plus feet of water. The chinooks that were being caught have started to change color.
  • Manitowoc Shore, Piers, and Harbor – While there were fish caught off the pier last weekend there was no reports of any salmon or trout caught off the pier this week. The number of anglers that are fishing on the piers have increased. Anglers fishing in the harbor this week have had luck fishing for northern pike. The pike are being caught on casting spoons. Smallmouth bass and largemouth bass were also caught throughout the harbor.
  • Two Rivers Ramp – With surface water temps at 74 degrees anglers are searching to find cooler water. The cold water was eventually found 80 feet down, it was roughly 55 degrees. Even with anglers finding the colder water the number of chinooks caught did not increase. Rainbows have been dominating the catch in Two Rivers as well. Early in the week there were a lot of shakers caught, but as the weekend progressed the fish increased in size.
  • Two Rivers Shore, Pier, and Harbor – Fishing pressure on the piers was low this week. The anglers that were fishing didn’t have any luck for salmon or trout. Smallmouth bass were seen along the rocks, but there was no luck on catching them. The anglers that decided to fish in the harbor were able to catch bullheads at will. That was the only species that was reported in the harbor this week.

Kewaunee Co.

  • Kewaunee Ramp – Fishing pressure was moderate for the majority of the week and into the weekend. Anglers were catching greater numbers of rainbow trout and some king salmon along with a few lake trout. The catch rate remained low. Water temperature was reported to be 74°F at the surface near the ramp, and 73°F all the way out to 300ft of water. The thermocline dropped to 47°F 80ft down in 300-400ft of water. It was as high as 58°F 60ft down in 180-200ft of water. Most folks were picking up rainbow trout in the 300-400ft of water. Good luck was had with chinook salmon using spoons, with no color standing out.
  • Kewaunee Shore & Piers – – There was a decrease in fishing pressure at the pier this week. No reports were had for brown trout or smallmouth bass.
  • Algoma Ramp – There was light fishing pressure this weekend with folks coming back with rainbow trout and king salmon along with a few lake trout. Water temperature was reported to be 72°F-74°F just about everywhere with north and northeast winds all week and weekend. Folks were getting chinook salmon closer to 190-200ft of water and 45-50ft down on spoons.
  • Algoma Shore and Pier – Anglers out at Olson park were catching small largemouth, northern pike, and yellow perch. Water temperature in the Ahnapee was reported to be 77°F at the surface near the ramp. Good luck was had using nightcrawlers for the perch.

Green Bay Fishing Report: August 20, 2018

Oconto County

  • Oconto Park II – Moderate fishing pressure with some success for walleye being reported.
  • Oconto Breakwater and Harbor Area – Walleye fishing dominated angling efforts Saturday afternoon. Part of the effort was due to a Walleye tournament on Sunday. Anglers had to work for their catch but released most fish that were caught. Surface water temperature was 79 degrees near the mouth of the Oconto.
  • Oconto River –
    • Municipal Boat Ramp – Basically an overflow lot for the breakwater area, dominated by Walleye anglers.
    • Holtwood Park Ramp – Low water with little to no fishing pressure.
    • North River Road Ramp – Light fishing pressure. Recreation dominated by kayakers.
    • Stiles Dam & Iron Bridge Area – Saturday afternoon hosted more activity from swimmers and kayakers than anglers. Anglers targeting bass and pan fish were met with limited success in the 78 degree water. Water levels remain at Summer lows. The areas close proximity to Green Bay, coupled with public access, makes it a favorite for casual angling.
  • Pensaukee River Boat Ramp – Saturday had high pressure from Walleye anglers pre-fishing for a Sunday Walleye tournament. Some kayakers fishing the river’s lily pads for Largemouth Bass. Decent catches of Yellow Perch reported and observed. Water temperature was 77 degrees.
  • Geano’s Beach – Suamico and Geano’s Beach remain the heaviest fished spots on the lower bay west shore. Most
  • boats are coming back with walleyes, but the bite has slowed down from previous weeks. Average catch was 3-5 fish for half a day out on the water. The catfish catch over the past week has skyrocketed with almost all the fishing boats interviewed catching at least one. Anglers also caught freshwater drum and a few white perch while out trolling. A couple Muskie anglers were interviewed as well but no fish were caught. During its busiest time the Sumaico launch had 20 trailers in it while the Geanos launch had 39.

Marinette County – Menomonee River

  • Menominee River –
    • Boom Landing Ramp – Light angling pressure reported for Sunday afternoon. Some effort for walleye with minimal success. Report of a 7.5-pound Channel Catfish being caught and released.
    • Ann Arbor Ramp – People enjoying the sites and walks to the lighthouse on a Sunday afternoon. No pier anglers and few boat anglers.
  • Red Arrow Park – No report is available this week. Please check back again next week for the latest report.
  • Little River Area – Boat anglers were having some success harvesting Yellow Perch off of the Little River Ramp on Sunday. Larger Perch preferred minnows to worms. Some sorting of catch needed to put larger fish to creel. Shore angling near the ramp was met with little success. Water was turbid and 78 degrees at the mouth of Little River.
  • Peshtigo River –
    • Peshtigo Dam Area – Low flows and low angler effort.
    • Peshtigo Municipal Garage Ramp – Light use over the weekend.
    • Klingsborn’s Ramp (5 mi down CTY RD BB outside Peshtigo) – A few anglers launching here to fish the lower river.
    • Peshtigo River Mouth (at the end of Harbor Rd in Peshtigo Harbor Wildlife Area) – Light fishing pressure from boats and shore anglers. Surface water temperature was 80 degrees at the river’s mouth. Boat anglers continue to have limited success on Walleye with crank baits, catching more Drum than targeted species. The area is also a destination for owners of water loving dogs. Some catches of Yellow Perch by shore anglers fishing nightcrawlers on the bottom near submergent vegetation.

Green Bay/Fox River

  • Metro Boat Launch – The parking lot averaged less than 10 trailers in it during the times that were surveyed. Only one fishing boat was interviewed and they came up short in their search for walleye and bass. The rest of the groups interviewed were pleasure boaters.
  • Fox Point/Fairgrounds – Fox point averaged 2-6 trailers in it over the past week with 6 being its busiest on Saturday. No boat interviews were taken but there were a few shore anglers out in search of a good time. They ended up catching a bunch of white perch. Fairgrounds only had 1 trailer in it during its busiest time. The launch was closed for the fair this past weekend. No interviews taken.
  • Voyager Park – Voyager averaged half a dozen anglers out over the past week. Those who were interviewed were in search of walleye or bass, but no fish were landed.
  • Duck Creek – The majority of effort has been placed towards yellow perch with mixed success. Some boats would come back with half a dozen fish while others wouldn’t catch a thing. Both launch areas averaged 2-3 trailers on the days that were surveyed. While out anglers also caught a few white perch and round gobies.

Brown County

  • Bayshore – No report is available this week from our creel census. Please check back in again next week for the most up to date information.
  • Suamico – Suamico and Geano’s Beach remain the heaviest fished spots on the lower bay west shore. Most boats are coming back with walleyes, but the bite has slowed down from previous weeks. Door County

  • Northern Door County, Green Bay Side – Only one boat was interviewed out of Ellison bay, and they were salmon fishing, posting a zero but getting a late start. Anglers fishing around the harbor with worms under a bobber caught a good number of small smallmouth and 2 fish over 14 inches, with one of those being over 20 inches. A couple boats were interviewed out of Sister Bay, both having targeted smallmouth. One boat had only fished for a short while due to the strong winds, and one came in having boated about 20 bass. They reported having caught their fish on small green pumpkin tubes. Some anglers hit the piers in Peninsula Park Saturday, but anglers reported being pestered by gobies more than anything. All anglers interviewed were fishing with worms and bobbers. Egg Harbor boasted some good action over the weekend. A handful of walleye anglers were interviewed that had success fishing crawler harnesses. They reported fishing just off structure in 18-24 feet-of-water and having good walleye action (upwards of 10 fish) for multiple mornings. One boat reported trolling harnesses at 1.3-1.4 miles per hour and not catching a single goby, while the other reported catching them, along with some drum and catfish reported from every boat. Anglers fishing around the harbor had good action too, with some decent perch, between 8 and 10 inches, along with rock bass and gobies being caught. Anglers were fishing with worms near the bottom and were able to see many of the different species they were targeting. Besides those, smallmouth bass, sunfish, and suckers were seen in good numbers along the rocks inside the harbor.
  • Northern Door County, Lake Michigan Side – In Baileys Harbor, anglers had some decent shore action for smallmouth fishing from the pier at Anclam Park. Small spinners and plastics both caught smallmouth, although most fish didn’t exceed 12 inches. Salmon anglers also had action, with reports from around 100 feet of water claiming as many as seven hits for a morning of fishing. Anglers didn’t land that many, but some chinooks and rainbows were harvested. Those receiving the most action reported that flashers and flies drew more hits, but orange spoons fished higher in the water also got some. Up in Rowleys Bay, fewer boats were out than during the week, but anglers fishing the pier provided some good information. Action on the piers included a mix of mostly gobies and small smallmouth. Anglers fishing with bobbers and worms or small plastics caught mostly gobies with some smallmouth mixed in, and anglers casting with small plastics but retrieving them off the bottom caught around a dozen smallmouth per hour. Most bass were under 12 inches, but one angler reported catching a 24-inch northern pike off the pier on a spoon. Gills Rock had a mix of salmon and bass anglers this weekend also, with the bass anglers having more success. The bass action came on small tubes and ned rigs fished on the drop-offs right across from the marina. The anglers reported catching around 12 bass in an hour-and-a-half. Salmon anglers reported fishing in 100-150 feet of water, with cold water present 50-75 feet down. One boat brought in a small rainbow and chinook and one came in with a zero, but they reported that fishing had been better before the north wind blew late in the week.
  • Chaudior’s Dock, Little Sturgeon Bay, Sawyer Harbor – No report is available this week from our creel census. Please check back in again next week for the most up to date information.

Sturgeon Bay

  • Sturgeon Bay City Shore – There was low fishing pressure along the shore along with northeast winds for the majority of the week. Anglers were out with a few reports of perch by the steel bridge. Good luck was had using nightcrawlers.
  • Sturgeon Bay Ramp – Many folks came back with decent size walleye throughout the week and into the weekend. Consistent success on large yellow perch as well was had in the canal for anglers with water temperature reported to be 76-77°F on the surface. Out past the canal folks were coming back with some chinook in 180-200ft of water. The water temperature was reported to be 73°F in 200ft of water at the surface.
  • Bay View Park – A few anglers were out for smallmouth bass this week though bringing in large freshwater drum on worms. Fishing pressure was low.
  • Sunset Park Ramp – A few anglers were out for smallmouth bass this week though bringing in large freshwater drum on worms. Fishing pressure was low.
  • Stone Quarry Ramp – Many large walleyes were being caught along with freshwater drum and smallmouth bass. Water was reported to be around 73°F at the surface near the ramp.
  • Stone Quarry Shore – There was a large number of smallmouth bass catches this week with the northeast wind bringing in a natural jig along the shore. Thursday and Friday had reports of smallies coming in at a reliable 15”-20.” Along the breakwall anglers were catching perch and rockbass. Good luck for smallmouth bass was had using bobbers and worms.
