Texas: Eighteen Gun Control Bills to Ban Youth Hunting
Eighteen bills, in several different variations, to eliminate youth hunting in the Lone Star State are scheduled to be heard Tuesday, April 18, at 2 p.m., in the House Select Committee on Community Safety in Room E2.012 of the Capitol Extension in Austin.
HB 129, HB 565, HB 761, HB 781, HB 925, HB 996, HB 1072, HB 1331, HB 1388, HB 2075, HB 2275, HB 2744, HB 2916, HB 3087, HB 3088, HB 3996, HB 4364 & HB 5188 – to view the text of any of these bills, please click here.
These bills, in varying forms, ban 18- to 20-year-olds from purchasing – and in some cases, possessing – any firearm or certain types of firearms. Some of these bills focus solely on that prohibition, while other bills include a laundry list of other restrictions on the Second Amendment rights of all age groups.
These bills are poised to destroy the firearm freedoms of law-abiding young Americans who shoot, hunt or defend themselves with a firearm. But while these measures strip away a young adult’s freedoms, they do not promote public safety in any meaningful way.
Many young Americans learn to shoot and hunt with modern semiautomatics, and it is the rare hunter that doesn’t use such firearms at least in some situations. This is obviously true for law-abiding citizens under the age of 21 as well, and they should not be discriminated against simply based on age. This is gun control on hysterics, with no connection to the real world or reduction of violent crime as a plausible rationale for such a draconian move.
Recently, a federal judge struck down a Minnesota law that restricted the firearm rights of those younger than 21, finding that the protections afforded to all citizens under the Second Amendment are equally enjoyed by those aged 18-20.
