Media AdvisorySturgeon Season Media AvailabilityFisheries and Law Enforcement Staff to Discuss Upcoming SeasonCONTACT: Ryan Koenigs, Winnebago System Sturgeon Biologist, 920-303-5450, ryan.koenigs@wisconsin.gov OSHKOSH, Wis. – Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist Ryan Koenigs and Law Enforcement Supervisor Chris Shea will be available for media inquiries regarding the 2020 surgeon spearing season on the Lake Winnebago system. The 2020 spearing season opens on Feb. 8 and runs through Feb. 23 or until pre-set harvest caps are reached. Koenigs and Shea will provide updates on water clarity, ice conditions, ice safety and other season topics and will take questions from news media. The Winnebago System is home to one of the world’s largest self-sustaining populations of lake sturgeon, with an estimated 18,500 adult females, 24,000 adult males and a unique spearing season dating back more than 85 years.
