Backcountry Beat

January 2020

Two weeks ago, sportsmen and women across the continent voiced their loud support for the introduction of the Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection and Pollution Prevention Act (H.R. 5598), bipartisan legislation which would withdraw mineral development and defend this incredible place from pollution. The mine proposed just a quarter-mile south of the BWCA — where all water flows north — could catalyze a steep decline in the quality of fish and wildlife and the world-class hunting and fishing opportunities in America’s most-visited wilderness area.

This past year, I was able to canoe through the BWCA with Lukas Leaf from Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters and a host of other champions for this treasured landscape. The time we spent chasing ruffed grouse, trolling for walleye and pike and shooting squirrels reaffirmed for me what many in Minnesota and beyond already know — this watershed deserves every ounce of protection that we can afford it.

That’s why I’m so excited about the opportunity to travel to D.C. next week to testify in front of the U.S. House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources in support of this legislation. Please join me in voicing your support for the BWCA by contacting your representative and asking them to cosponsor this bill.

Let’s keep the BWCA clean and full of fish, fowl and whitetail for the next generation.
