Wood duck & bluebird house project returns: Your latest Manitowoc outdoors report
The county had its first CWD-positive case from a deer harvested Nov. 23 on private property.
Maribel Sportsmen’s Club and Francis Creek Sportsman’s Club are again underway with their annual wood duck and bluebird house project.
Bat houses will not be available until I can locate some 10-inch-wide, rough-cut pine. I have plenty of narrow pine, but it is the 10-inch-wide boards we are looking for.
These houses are given out to conservation-minded individuals to place out on the landscape to enhance nesting capabilities for those species.
Any donations collected go directly back into the purchase of more lumber and supplies to keep the project going.
If you would like some of these houses, give me, Bob Schuh, a call at 920-682-3106 to make arrangements to pick them up.
County has first CWD-positive case
The following message comes from Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Biologist Steve Easterly:
As identified in the department’s policy regarding notification for the first chronic wasting disease-positive result in a county, I am notifying you that the department received notification of the first CWD-positive wild test result in Manitowoc County.
This test result is from a wild 1-year-old buck harvested Nov. 23 on private property. The deer was harvested within 10 miles of both Calumet and Sheboygan counties. It is about 20 miles from the nearest wild positive deer in Sheboygan County and about 3 miles from the nearest captive positive deer in Manitowoc County.
This CWD-positive test result will create a new baiting and feeding ban in Manitowoc, but this county already has local ordinance restricting baiting and feeding in the county. It will reset the baiting and feeding dates for Calumet. It will not impact the baiting and feeding ban in Sheboygan County, as this county has a later expiration date due to captive positive detections within the county.
The email from Easterly also noted a public meeting will be held on this matter at a later date. We are hoping to have details on this meeting before our Manitowoc County Fish & Game annual meeting Jan. 30 at City Limits. When we are notified of that meeting, I will have the details in this column.

Maribel club’s indoor archery league: A reminder
Don’t forget that Maribel Sportsmen’s Club has its indoor archery league going from 6 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday.
This is a fun league where you shoot against your own scores. Just stop in when you can make it and keep those archery skills sharp over the winter months.
That’s it for this week, so have fun in the great outdoors.
