(WQOW) – Beware of your target. That is the message the DNR is trying to get out to hunters after two elk were shot illegally during the gun deer season.
According to the DNR, an adult bull elk was shot and killed after being misidentified by a deer hunter near Warrens on Saturday. He self reported the incident to the DNR after realizing his mistake.
The elk was taken from the man and the meat will be donated to the Jackson County Food Pantry.
A second elk, an adult cow, was shot in the Jackson County Forest on Monday morning. The DNR is still looking for a suspect in the case. If you have any information about this elk, you are asked to call the DNR’s confidential tip line at 1-800-TIP-WDNR (1-800-847-9367).
The DNR is reminding hunters that are near the Black River or Clam Lake elk ranges to be aware they may encounter an elk.
News 18 has a message out to the DNR to find out what the penalty is for illegally shooting an elk.
