Wisconsin: Vote Tomorrow on Credit Card Privacy and Hunting-Related Bills

Tomorrow, Friday, January 5th, at 10:00 a.m. in room 15 South, the Senate Financial Institutions and Sporting Heritage Committee will take a vote on several bills of interest to sportsmen.

SB 466  prohibits a financial institution, as part of a payment card transaction, from requiring the use of a merchant category code that identifies the merchant as a firearms retailer. The bill also provides that the Department of Justice may not maintain a list of firearm purchasers based on information from background checks that DOJ performs and that no governmental entity may maintain a list of firearm owners.

SB 545 repeals the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) administrative code provision that generally prohibits a person from hunting or pursuing any free-roaming wild animal with the aid of a dog from May 1 to June 30 in a portion of the state north of certain east-west highways. The bills also repeal DNR’s administrative code restrictions on dog training and dog trialing on any free-roaming wild animal in that area and during that period.

SB 586 allows airgun use for large game during seasons that are open to firearm hunting.

SB 587 updates the definition of “muzzle-loading firearm,” as that term applies to hunting, to
mean a firearm that shoots a projectile loaded exclusively from the muzzle.
