Last week, the Wisconsin legislature adjourned its final floor period of the year, effectively closing the 2023-2004 bi-annual session.
The Sportsmen’s Alliance has been monitoring the progress of several bills of concern to sportsmen. Three bills have made it to Governor Tony Ever’s desk, and Governor Ever has already signed two into law.
SB 586 allows airgun use for large game during seasons that are open to firearm hunting.
SB 587 updates the definition of “muzzle-loading firearm,” as that term applies to hunting.
The bill to protect sportsmen’s credit card privacy rights is still on his desk for consideration.
SB 466 prohibits a financial institution, as part of a payment card transaction, from requiring the use of a merchant category code that identifies the merchant as a firearms retailer. The bill also provides that the Department of Justice may not maintain a list of firearm purchasers based on information from background checks that DOJ performs, and that no governmental entity may maintain a list of firearm
owners.
Unfortunately, one bill failed to make it through the legislative process and was defeated.
SB 545 repeals the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) administrative code provision that generally prohibits a person from hunting or pursuing any free-roaming wild animal with the aid of a dog from May 1 to June 30 in a portion of the state north of certain east-west highways. The bills also repeal DNR’s administrative code restrictions on dog training and dog trialing on any free-roaming wild animal in that area and during that period.
Even though the 2024 legislative session is over, the Sportsmen’s Alliance will continue to monitor activities in the Badger State. You never know when issues that sportsmen need to be aware of may arise.
You can view the bills the Sportsmen’s Alliance monitored during the legislative session on our interactive legislative map. Please share this message with your family and friends, as sportsmen throughout Wisconsin must continue to stay actively involved in defending our hunting, fishing, and trapping heritage for present and future generations to enjoy.
