State Game Farm Gets Hatching

Spring Magazine Spotlights Important Facility

Pheasant chicks at the State Game Farm.

It’s hatching season at the Wisconsin State Game Farm! From April until July, the facility near Poynette will hatch approximately 230,000 ring-necked pheasant chicks to be stocked for hunting in the fall. Many of these chicks also are reared, or raised, at the facility, while others go to conservation clubs for rearing and eventual release as part of the DNR’s Day-old Chick program.

The State Game Farm is the source of every single pheasant stocked on Wisconsin’s public lands, with the DNR alone stocking about 75,000 pheasants on more than 80 properties statewide in 2024. More birds from the game farm are stocked by partners as well.

You can read more about the State Game Farm and how pheasants go “From farm to field” in the latest issue of Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine.
