Share Your Passion For Turkey Hunting By Hosting A Learn To Hunt Event

We encourage instructors to have fun, form relationships and show others why you love hunting – there’s no better way to grow the sport we love!

Are you passionate about turkey hunting? Share your knowledge, experience and enthusiasm by hosting a Learn to Hunt event for people looking to learn more and become better turkey hunters.

Wisconsin has a proud hunting history, and our unique Learn to Hunt program is a great way for anyone curious about hunting to learn more about this time-honored tradition from DNR staff and experienced hunters.

The Learn to Hunt class format to breaks hunting lessons into bite-sized pieces and assumes students have limited or no prior knowledge of firearm safety, license requirements, general hunting etiquette or hunting regulations. The program is built around the idea that while the knowledge and skills required to safely hunt can feel overwhelming at first, they will become second nature with quality instruction and a little practice.

To make things easier for attendees and instructors alike, some hunting rules and requirements may be waived (with approval) for Learn to Hunt events. These include hunting license and stamp requirements as well as season dates.

If you’re interested in grabbing a group of friends to host a Learn to Hunt event, here are some quick facts:

  • A Learn to Hunt event must include at least four hours of instruction. This can cover a variety of topics including safe hunting practices, animal biology, hunting tactics, target practice and what to do with the harvest after the hunt.
  • Volunteer Learn to Hunt Instructors must pass a DNR background check and have at least five years of hunting experience for the target species. No additional training is required at this time, but staff are ready to help make your event a success!
  • At least one volunteer for each event must be an active Hunter Safety Instructor. We can help connect you with active safety instructors.
  • Learn to Hunt events culminate in a one-on-one mentored hunting experience. For approved events, participants are not required to have hunter safety certification, as they can hunt during the event by following the Mentored Hunting Law (although instructors may require certification at their discretion).
  • While hunting, participants have the option of harvesting an animal using a no-cost Learn to Hunt harvest authorization.
  • The most common structure of a Learn to Hunt is to meet once for the classroom session and then reconvene the following weekend for the mentored hunting experience.
    • However, there are a variety of class structures that vary from single-day programs to multi-week classes.
    • Hunting time periods can be extended with approval from the local wildlife biologist to accommodate schedules and provide additional mentored hunting experiences.
  • Many Learn to Hunt instructors take pride in creating positive experiences for people new to the hunting community. We encourage instructors to have fun, form relationships and show others why you love hunting – there’s no better way to grow the sport we love!
