Reviving Conservation, Collaboration, and Community in the Lakeshore Region
Dear Friend of LNRP,

 

Spring is an ideal time for Phenology, the study of observations in natural events and biological cycles. Aldo Leopold, an inspirational conservationist and author of A Sand County Almanac, was passionate about this topic and detailed his own observation calendar at his family farm, known as the “The Shack”, in Sauk County. You, like Leopold, may begin to notice the following spring events in your area:

  • Sandhill Cranes flying and calling overhead starting in April
  • Basswood and Linden Trees blooming the first few weeks of May
  • Monarch Butterflies returning from migration at the beginning of June

 

What wonders have you noticed this season?

 

At the Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership, our spring work aligns with the events we observe in nature at this time of year: the revival and rebuilding of our natural world.

During our strategic planning process in late 2024, LNRP adopted new Mission and Vision statements to better reflect our evolving values and principles. We also began work reviving our tagline: ‘Conservation, Collaboration, and Community,’ connecting it to the people, projects, and places that we support each day. As we witness new growth outside, ‘Conservation, Collaboration, and Community’ will reverberate this Spring, each element serving an overarching theme for centering our work!

 

Conservation

  • Our projects over the past 23 years have had a significant impact on the health and well-being of the Lake Michigan Basin. Through our quarterly newsletters, social media channels, and community events, LNRP keeps the lakeshore community informed about our work in biodiversity, climate resilience, and water quality.  Stay connected with us by signing up for emails at lnrp.org/connect!

Collaboration

  • Our regional networks, watershed groups, community partners, and local governments represent the watershed collaborations that drive critical efforts for on-the-ground projects, educational programming, volunteering and scientific research.

Community

  • Communities and the people who live in them are the foundation to LNRP’s mission and vision. By strengthening our water conservation and collaboration initiatives, we continue to connect communities to their environments and further improve the quality of life for all living things throughout the Lake Michigan Basin.
This spring, take a walk along the Manitowoc River at Henry Schuette Park, visit the Valley Creek Corridor in Port Washington, or visit newly planted trees at Newport State Park. Observe the happenings around you and create your own Phenology Calendar!
