Steineke: Statement on Increased Gun Laws

MADISON – Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) released the following statement reacting to the news conference earlier today hosted by Governor Tony Evers:

With the release of his proposed legislation today, Governor Evers is giving the people of Wisconsin the impression that somehow expanded background checks would have a dramatic impact on gun violence here in Wisconsin.

Simply put, it is disingenuous to suggest that requiring background checks on private sales would have prevented the tragedies we’ve seen as a state and nation. That’s why Assembly Republicans have been and remain committed to providing and expanding mental health resources to those in need – which has time and again been a root cause of many of these shootings.

Just as we do with other legislation, our caucus will meet at a later date to review the legislation proposed today.
