Pheasants Forever banquet & more in the latest Manitowoc outdoors report
A local Pheasants Forever chapter will hold its 2025 fundraising banquet Feb. 8.
The Sheboygan/Manitowoc Chapter of Pheasants Forever, a unit of Manitowoc County Fish & Game, will hold its 2025 fundraising banquet Feb. 8 at Laack’s Ballroom, W4302 Highway JM, Sheboygan Falls. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m.
Funds benefit habitat restoration and youth education in Sheboygan and Manitowoc counties, including supporting youth pheasant hunts, Camp Y Koda, youth trap shooting and more.
In 2024, the organization used funds raised by the banquet to assist landowners in developing 43 acres in new wildlife habitat areas, including a pollinator project with the Reedsville School District.

Maribel club’s rummage sale & chicken booyah is Feb. 15
Maribel Sportsman’s Club will hold its 17th annual Sportsmen’s Rummage Sale and chicken booyah from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Feb. 15.
Buy, sell or trade shooting, archery, fishing and hunting gear, and vintage collectible items.
Food, including the chicken booyah, is available from 10 a.m. until it’s gone. People can eat in or carry out.

The event will feature more than 50 vendor tables. Admission is free to the public. Anyone with questions or interested in table availability can contact Shawn Seefeldt at 920-323-9412 or [email protected].
Reedsville club’s winter archery league starts Jan. 14
Reedsville Sportsmen’s Club will run its 10-week winter archery league starting at 6 p.m. Jan. 14 and 16. The course will be set up for 20-yard and 40-yard shooting.

Reminder: Big Game Extravaganza is Jan. 18
A reminder from last week’s column that Maribel Sportsman’s Club’s Big Game Extravaganza is Jan. 18.
The event will run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. People can take in any North American big-game mount and display it for the day. All exhibitors get a free chance to win a gun. The exhibitors’ gun drawing will be at 4 p.m.
There is no charge to show your mount and there is no admission fee. Official scorers for Boone and Crockett, Pope and Young, and the Wisconsin Record Book to score your trophy. Scoring will be done from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a cost of $10 per mount. Scorers will help get your trophy into the record books. Food and refreshments will be available.

Governor appoints new Wisconsin DNR secretary
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has appointed Karen Hyun to serve as secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Hyun has extensive experience working on natural resources, stewardship and conservation issues. She most recently served as chief of staff of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration since 2021. She also has more than a decade of experience in policy and environmental work.
Hyun began her career in 2009, staffing the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Natural Resources. In 2012, she served as a senior policy adviser for the U.S. Department of Commerce Office of the Secretary and also the chief of staff position for the department’s Office of the Deputy Secretary in 2013.
Hyun then became the senior advisor for NOAA in June 2014 before becoming the deputy assistant secretary for fish, wildlife and parks at the Department of the Interior in 2015.
Additionally, she led and coordinated initiatives focused on coastal resilience, Gulf of Mexico restoration, marine conservation, and coastal stewardship at the National Audubon Society, serving as the director of water and coastal policy before becoming the vice president of coastal conservation in 2018.
Hyun resides in Madison.
