DAILY ALERT FOR Wednesday, August 1, 2018 |
A federal judge in Seattle issued a temporary restraining order on Tuesday that prevents the publication of online 3D blueprints for plastic yet deadly guns. |
A Republican senator on Tuesday blocked legislation that would ban blueprints of 3D printed guns from being posted online. |
Making a gun on a 3D printer is not like hitting the Easy button at Staples, says a Harrisburg University of Science and Technology professor. It requires engineering know-how and some money. |
This is called the “Streisand Effect” and is one of the most predictable rules of the internet. Whenever the government (or a celebrity, or a company) tries to censor something, they immediately make it exponentially more popular and widespread than it was in the first place. |
On Tuesday, President Trump tweeted “I am looking into 3-D Plastic Guns being sold to the public. Already spoke to the NRA, doesn’t seem to make much sense.” The president, lawmakers, and many Americans have targeted 3D-printed guns as the latest menace to society. Perhaps they should also direct their attention at books such as the Improvised Munitions Handbook that are easily accessible as free PDFs and contain DIY plans for guns and much, much more. |
Political pundits and reporters on Tuesday pushed back on misinformation regarding the 3D-printed plastic gun furor prompted by a Justice Department settlement with nonprofit group Defense Distributed, enabling it to publish blueprints for firearms that will be accessible to anyone with an Internet connection. |
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau refused to say directly Monday whether his government would mandate a total handgun ban in Toronto. |
There are at least two dozen people on St. Paul’s North End obtaining permits to carry a concealed weapon in response to a summer increase in crime. |
Another staggering display of media ignorance about firearms. One of the most bizarre aspects of the modern gun debate is the extent to which it is still dominated by ignorance and misinformation. One of the most important controversies in American public life rages on, yet media gatekeepers and all too many politicians simply don’t know the most basic facts. They don’t understand the most basic constitutional issues. Even worse, many of them don’t seem to care. |
