New Mexico House Committee Passes Gun Control Bills
Yesterday, the House Consumer & Public Affairs Committee passed both gun control measures on a party-line 4-2 vote. These bills will be sent to the House Judiciary for further consideration. At this time neither bill has a hearing date scheduled, but we will be monitoring the committee agenda and inform you when action is needed.
House Bill 100 adds a mandatory 14-day waiting period on all firearm purchases. Waiting periods have not been shown to promote public safety. Instead, these arbitrary waiting periods limit the actions of law-abiding citizens, including those who want a firearm for self-defense or for hunting.
House Bill 101 redefines several commonly-owned semi-automatic rifles, pistols and shotguns as “assault weapons” and bans the possession, manufacture, purchase, sale, and transfer of these “assault weapons,” along with standard capacity magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition. There is no grandfather clause and current owners would be required to move the redefined “assault weapons” out of the state, sell them to a federal firearm licensed dealer or surrender them to a law enforcement agency prior to July 1, 2023 or face FELONY charges.
