Tournament walleye pros Tommy Skarlis and John Balla both rely on a host of Legend Tournament Walleye rods to help them fish at the highly technical level that’s earned both top spots on the leaderboard time and time again.
Tommy Skarlis comments: “You can’t help but want to pick it up and want to fish with it. Once you grab a hold of it, then you realize the sensitivity and the fishability is more incredible than its curb appeal. I fish with St. Croix rods like how some pro golfers use golf clubs; I’ve got specific rods for specific tactics and there are quite a number for rods in the St. Croix Legend Tournament Walleye Series that really fill out my walleye repertoire.”
Similarly, John Balla remarks: “Legend Tournament Walleye rods are the best performance for the money walleye rod series on the market. From vertical jigging in a river with the 6’3” medium-power, extra-fast to live bait rigging with the 7’ medium-light power, fast action to casting crankbaits with the medium moderate spinning rod, all the way up to the full-length 8’6” extra-fast for live bait, slip bobbers, lighter jigs, and now the craze of casting light hair jigs. Selecting any one of the rods in this series is going to give you tremendous performance for the money. For me, it’s the best value walleye rod series on the market.”
Both anglers are particularly fond of the longer live bait rod options found in the Legend Tournament Walleye series, the LWS76MLXF 7’6” medium-light power, extra-fast action SLIP-N-RIG rod and the LWS86MLXF 8’6” medium-light power, extra-fast action LIVE BAIT rod.
Skarlis notes: “One of the rods that I really rely on is the LWS76MLXF 7’6” medium-light power, extra-fast action SLIP-N-RIG rod for dragging live bait rigs downstream or dragging jigs across sand flats in a lake or clam beds in a river. For some reason it imparts an action on baits that walleyes just prefer over other rods. We’ve had four different rods in rod holders and for some reason that’s the rod that gets bit. It just has the right action and approach to catch fish. And if you’re going to live bait rig like out on the mud flats of Mille Lacs or the deep humps in Walker Bay on Leech Lake, that rod is incredible for live bait rigging where you absolutely, positively have to feel a light bite or a bait pick-up.”

And for John Balla, the longer live bait rods have proved especially effective in situations involving hair jigs. “First off, the length stretches out the action a little farther so the fish isn’t detecting you. It also gives you more leverage for the hookset. I’m also a big fan of the 8’6” LIVE BAIT rod for the latest craze of throwing lighter hair jigs. It’s a fantastic for that technique besides natural lake rigging and other live bait options. Right now a lot of walleye anglers are pitching lighter hair jigs and casting greater distances into shallower water structure and catching walleyes on the Great Lakes, up in Minnesota, upper Wisconsin. Ask me, there’s no better rod than the 8’6” medium-light, extra-fast Legend Tournament Walleye LIVE BAIT rod for casting a light hair jig to shallow, clear water structure.”
Balla adds: “Another thing: With regards to the entire Legend Tournament Series I was glad to know they brought the full cork back. Full cork helps a lot with feel. It also helps with pressure displacement on your forearm that a split-grip rod provides. I think it’s also advantageous for moving in and out of rod holders, which walleye anglers do quite a bit, whether it’s live bait rigging, slip bobbering or pulling three-ways.”
While tournament pros are fond of the Legend Tournament Walleye series, you don’t have to be a pro to appreciate their performance. If you take walleye fishing seriously and are looking for the perfect rod to match a technique, Legend Tournament walleye rods are for you. From rods optimized for vertical jigging to rigging and finesse, as well shallow and deep-water crankin’ and many more, there’s a solution for every walleye technique imaginable that will put the performance preferred by walleye tournament pro anglers in your hands, too.
