LAKE MICHIGAN DAYS AUGUST 9th , 2024

Join Lake Michigan Stakeholders for Lake Michigan Day on Friday, August 9th from 8:30 am – 3:00 pm at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc!

Lake Michigan Day is an opportunity to learn about the ongoing efforts to restore and protect Lake Michigan and its surrounding communities, and celebrate leaders in this effort.

This year there will be several 10-minute Lightning Talks:

Speaker: Susie Seidelman (Take Back My Meds Coalition Director and Victura Communications Director)

Topic: Pharmaceutical Extended Producer Responsibility Ordinances for Environmental and Public Health

Take Back My Meds is a coalition dedicated to providing accessible and secure medicine take-back locations for Wisconsin residents to combat the opioid crisis and improve water quality. This talk will focus on their campaign for pharmaceutical Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) ordinances and their potential transformative impact.

Speaker: Bridget Brown (Chief Operations and Programs Officer with the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative)

Topic: Coastal Resilience led by the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative has provided coastal resilience project development and financing support to over 100 communities in the region. This talk will highlight program successes, 1-2 innovative Lake Michigan project examples, and common themes that have emerged regarding remaining challenges faced by Great Lakes coastal communities.

Speaker: Gavin Dehnert (Emerging Contaminants Scientist with University of Wisconsin Sea Grant)

Topic: Assessing PFAS Contamination of Essential Tribal Resources

This talk will focus on a Tribal-driven, three-year research project investigating the presence of PFAS in maple sap, wild rice, fish, and other essential harvestable goods in ceded territories. The study aims to assess the impact of PFAS on these resources, which are vital to the Anishinaabe way of life, while educating tribal communities without causing undue alarm.
