JOB ANNOUNCEMENT- Invasive Species Management Intern

Glacierland RC&D is seeking an invasive species management intern for a limited-term position for the summer of 2021. This position will include a diverse work experience where interns will operate on a rotating schedule of inventory, control, and outreach duties. The primary duties of this position will be mapping and data entry of ash trees in Sheboygan County, conducting invasive species treatments with a Stantec Consulting Services Inc. ecosystem restoration crew, including application of aquatic-approved herbicides in Manitowoc, Sheboygan, and Ozaukee counties, and implementing a Clean Boats Clean Waters Program in Manitowoc & Kewaunee counties by conducting boat inspections at local boat landings to educate the public about preventing aquatic invasive species, and collecting and submitting data boater survey information to the Wisconsin DNR. This position is dependent on funding from the USDA Forest Service and the Wisconsin DNR and is anticipated to begin June 1st, 2021 and run through August 27th, 2021.

 

Job Description: This is a full-time 30 to 40-hour work week, limited-term position from June 1st through August 27th. Trucks will be used to travel to work sites and safely transport herbicide and equipment. Interns must provide their own transportation to the location where trucks will be provided. Interns may need to provide their own transportation to select work sites and for certain duties depending on truck availability. Employment will be contingent on applicants obtaining certifications in both State of Wisconsin Aquatic & Mosquito (5.0) and Right-of-Way & Natural Areas (6.0) categories. Interns will be reimbursed the cost of training materials and an online course but will not be paid for their time obtaining both certifications. The certification exams are free and once certifications are obtained, interns are required to pay the commercial for hire applicator license fee out of pocket.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Invasive Species Control:

·     Obtain a State of Wisconsin commercial pesticide for hire applicator license operating under the Glacierland RC&D business license, which will require applicants to pass two certification exams. Study materials, an online course fees will be reimbursed by Glacierland RC&D.

·     Work in intern teams of two or more conducting invasive species treatments, including application of aquatic-approved herbicides using backpack sprayers.

·     Assist Stantec project managers or task leads on daily job site duties (chemical storage, job site cleaning, mixing chemical, etc.).

·     Adhere to Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. and Glacierland RC&D’s safety protocols (reviewed daily).

 

Outreach as Watercraft Inspector:

·     Complete Clean Boats Clean Waters training workshop.

·     Inspect watercraft and trailers for invasive species at public water access sites in Manitowoc & Kewaunee counties.

·     Educate the public on how to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.

·     Distribute informational materials to boaters.

·     Conduct a verbal survey and enter data to the SWIMS online database.

·     Participate in State-wide led efforts including Drain Campaign, AIS Snapshot Day, Landing Blitz, and Project RED.

 

EAB Mitigation Sheboygan County

·     Inventory and report ash trees on municipal property in Sheboygan County.

·     Travel to identified public sites and record data on ash trees

·     Enter data results into reporting templates

 

Qualifications:

·     Current student pursuing, or recent graduate with, an associate or bachelor’s degree in the natural resources field.

·     Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative attitude.

·     Ability to self-start and work independently.

·     Excellent communication skills with the general public.

·     Attention to detail and record-keeping.

·     Willingness to travel to/from and throughout the project areas (Manitowoc, Sheboygan, Fond du Lac, Ozaukee, Washington, and Kewaunee counties).

·     Must possess or obtain a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.

·     Must have reliable personal vehicle with proof of auto insurance coverage and a good driving record.

·     Ability to obtain State of Wisconsin for “Aquatic & Mosquito (5.0)” and “Right-of-Way & Natural Areas (6.0) certifications, and obtain a State of Wisconsin Individual Commercial Pesticide Applicator – For Hire – license. ·     Ability to lift 50lbs and walk 2-4 miles per day often over uneven terrain.

·     Ability to work outside with exposure to the elements, including a variety of weather conditions, insects, pests, plants, and common allergens.

·     Ability to work during peak boating hours including weekends and some holidays

·     Familiarity with aquatic invasive species and local land/water conservation issues preferred.

·     Plant identification experience preferred.

 

Compensation:

·     This position will pay $15 per hour.

·     Personal vehicle mileage reimbursement at the current federal mileage rate for travel within the project area.

·     Interns will be reimbursed for the cost of study materials and courses for obtaining a State of Wisconsin commercial pesticide license upon employment.
