Fish School’s In Session
If you’ve been lucky enough to be fishing all summer, there’s no need to stop now! And, it’s not too late if you missed the boat in summer – just check into Fishing Base Camp for tips, activities and games to get you started on your quest to be a safe and successful angler.
No matter if your classroom is at the kitchen table, in your school or a combination, Badgers know that we all need to keep working together to stay healthy. Fish might school up for protection, but for us, safety is in low numbers and at least 6 feet apart. That’s about the length of one fishing pole – measure it!
Check the garage for a fishing pole or learn to make a pop-can rig.

Check out these classroom resources where math, science, social studies and writing meet the great outdoors, close to home in these engaging lesson plans. Many reinforce state academic standards and will get kids out in the backyard or to nearby waters with a parent or guardian, while sneakily keeping their academic skills up to snuff. These resources are helpful for all anglers, so be sure to check them out if you’re a lifelong learner! Remember that anglers ages 16 and older need to buy a fishing license before they hit the water.
Junior Angler is designed for anglers in grades 4-8 and Hook, Line & Thinker is geared for grades 7-12. Mix and match to suit your anglers’ needs.
Recipe Of The Month
Easy-Peasy Panfish
This recipe is easy to expand if you have more fish to fry. Experiment with different breadings and seasonings and you’ll soon come up with your own family favorite.
Ingredients and cooking instructions:
- About one pound of panfish, filleted or cleaned and scaled. Look below for cleaning instructions.
- 1 egg, beaten
Mix together dry ingredients for a light breading:
Steps:
- Rinse, then pat the fish dry with paper towel.
- Dip the fish in the beaten egg, then dredge through the breading mixture.
- Shake off excess breading and carefully place the fish in the sizzling oil in the frying pan.
- Fry over medium to high heat for about 2 minutes on each side, then transfer to a paper towel to absorb excess oil. Fish with the bones in will take a little bit longer to cook.
Tip: Fry the leftover egg and breading in fish grease for the dog! |
Panfish Cleaning: The Basics
Here are two ways to clean panfish:
1. Scale it and remove the innards but leave the bones in. The bones will easily pull away from the flesh when you panfry it.
2. Fillet and skin it. This takes more practice, so forgive yourself if you make mistakes. You’ll get better every time.
