Deer Habitat in a Squirt Bottle part 1: If we ask you to imagine going outside today and creating some great deer habitat, what do you picture? Did you think of something you could add, like seeds or trees you can plant? Let’s be honest, adding things is what most of us think of first. But we’ve come to realize that great deer habitat can also be made by subtracting. Here’s how. Mature Buck Harvest Sets a New National Record According to NDA’s 2021 Deer Report Deer hunters in the U.S. took more adult and mature bucks in the 2019-20 hunting season than ever reported, based on a near-record buck harvest of 2.9 million and a record 39% of those bucks estimated to be 3½ years or older. This is one of many new insights of NDA’s 2021 Deer Report, a comprehensive update on the status of deer populations and deer hunting, released yesterday. Get your free copy at the link below.

Last week’s Tennessee buck is a classic example of what is very likely a 3½-year-old buck, and 64% of respondents recognized it. He is a buck in his adult prime. Muscular and athletic, yet still slender and sleek. His back and stomach are flat, and his legs still somewhat “long” for his body, but he is heavily muscled in his neck and shoulders. Though thick, his neck still does not quite flow into his brisket without a break. He has the classic “front-heavy” or “buffalo” appearance of a 3½-year-old.
Here’s a New Age This! Buck Aaron Warren got this photo of a New Jersey buck on November 10, during the peak of the rut. What’s your age estimate for this buck? To cast your vote, click on the link below. We’ll publish the results in our next NDA e-newsletter, along with a new buck for you to age.
