License buyers can add to Wisconsin’s outdoor legacy
Paul Smith, Milwaukee Journal SentinelAs most conservationists know, quality habitat is a key to healthy wildlife populations.
But even if that worthy goal is attained, it takes lots of work – and money – to maintain it.
In just a matter of years, invasive species can creep in and crowd out native plants. Over the longer term, hardwood stands mature and need to be thinned.
And grasslands and wetlands often require controlled burns on a regular basis to provide the maximum benefit to fish and wildlife.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has skilled staff to perform the work on public lands. But money to pay for the work has been a bigger challenge. |
