Tacoma, Washington (February 3, 2020) “Even though circle hooks have been around for years, it’s been a hard sell to many anglers,” admitted Gamakatsu® Sales Manager Jeff Roberts. “It’s difficult to understand the benefits of circle hooks until you use them. Most catfish anglers have transitioned to circle hooks, and they’ve always been a favorite of tarpon anglers for their hooking and holding power.” Savvy anglers are seeing the light and have switched to Gamakatsu® Circle hooks for big game species.
First time circle hook users have a hard time grasping the fact you don’t set the hook with a circle hook. “The point on a circle hook is at a 90-degree angle to the shank and rotates to “set” the hook, usually pulling into the very corner of the jaw,” said Roberts. “The new Octopus Outbarb Circle Hook is a version of the same concept. The Outbarb Circle Hook design increases the strength and integrity of the hook while providing two holding points.”
Tests have proven that when an outbarb is combined with Gamakatsu’s Circle hook design, it results in deeper penetration and a higher hook retention rate. Think about it: a barb on the inner side of a hook bend is somewhat protected. A barb on the outside of the hook bend will come into contact with whatever flesh it touches and prevent movement in the opposite direction from which it entered.
Gamakatsu’s new Octopus Circle Outbarb hook is 1X-strong and perfect for techniques, like jigging, chunk baiting, and bottom fishing. “We see the new Outbarb Circle Hook as an improvement on an already superior design,” said Roberts.
