As a follow up to the Emerald Ash outbreak email I sent: this is a good website I came across that identifies tree and shrub native species for birds to plant.
You enter your zip code and you will see a pretty good list of native species with picture and description. If you have property in another area by entering the zip code you will get a accurate description of plants.
A tree that came up on my list was a tamarack, I planted two trees 30 years ago in my front yard around my well more as decorative shrubs. The soils was clay but not a wet site like you would expect, the trees are now 40 ft. high and turn a beautiful gold in late October when most tree leaves have dropped.
