In September 2022, Charlie Philipps of Mishicot held a bear tag for Zone C, so he hunted on family property in Marinette County near McAllister.

He was successful, harvesting a 394-pound black bear after field dressing.

Stan Zirbel of Wisconsin Buck and Bear Club scored the bear skull and it measured 19-2/16 inches, making it into the Wisconsin record book.

The newest record book will be published in 2024, so that is when Charlie’s bear will be listed.

This is not the only listing in the record book for Charlie, as he also has a white-tailed buck in the book that he shot years ago in Marinette County.

Both of these heads can be seen by the public April 20, 2024, at the Maribel Sportsman’s Club. Maribel is the host club for the newly created North American Big Game Extravaganza. Official scorers will be there to score any big game taken in North America. This is an event that is open to the public for viewing trophy heads and horns.

Fish & Game thanks Cleveland club for land purchase

Manitowoc County Fish & Game Protective Association held its annual banquet Oct. 19 at City Limits.

During the banquet, a plaque of appreciation was given to Cleveland Fish and Game giving thanks for a land donation.

In August, Cleveland Fish and Game purchased 5 acres of land from the Schacht family. The land is in town of Centerville, just south of the town of Cleveland.

After the land purchase, Cleveland Fish and Game donated the 5 acres to Manitowoc County Fish & Game. The land will be made public for all to enjoy for conservation activities such as hunting, gathering, hiking and bird watching.

Gun sight-ins offered at three area clubs Nov. 4-5

The following clubs are offering gun sight-ins Nov. 4-5:

• Viking Bow & Gun Club, 13431 Rusch Road, Valders, is holding gun sight-ins from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 4 and 5. The sight-ins are open to the public and a small range fee will be charged.
• Maribel Sportsman’s Club will hold gun sight-ins Nov. 4-5. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. Cost is $5 per gun, which includes targets, sight-in help and some minor gunsmithing. Maribel Sportsman’s Club is next to Interstate 43, exit 164, State 147, Maribel.
• Manitowoc Rifle & Pistol Club will hold its 2023 deer hunters’ sight-in at the club, 7227 Sandy Hill Lane, Two Rivers. Take State 42 north of Two Rivers, then east on Viceroy Road, and north on Sandy Hill Lane. Register at the clubhouse when you arrive. Cost is $5 per participant. Eye and hearing protection is available if needed. Supervised 25-yard, 50-yard and 100-yard ranges are available. Range stations are sheltered from the weather with a spotter at each station. Lunch is available inside the clubhouse. Hours are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily. Note a change of dates from past years: Nov. 4 and 5. There will not be a sight-in on the weekend before the deer hunting gun season as in the past.
