Oct. 14 was a rainy Saturday morning, but we had some errands to do.

I loaded up the truck with recyclables and Mary and I headed toward the town of Kossuth recycling center.

We turned off Polifka Road onto Meier Road and headed south. All at once, Mary caught her breath when she spotted an adult bald eagle sitting in the field right next to the ditch line. She took her foot off the gas and let the truck slow to a stop near the eagle.

The eagle sat there looking around as Mary frantically dug out her phone. She snapped the photo and then the eagle lifted up and flew to the west.

Mary is fond of bald eagles for sentimental reasons, so she was pleasantly surprised on how good the photo turned out.

Challenge The Outdoors hunters score 11 antlerless deer, seven bucks

Challenge The Outdoors had 44 hunters signed up for Wisconsin’s deer hunt for people with disabilities, which ran Oct. 7-15.

This was one of the best years ever as the group shot 11 antlerless deer and seven bucks.

The largest buck was a 13-pointer shot by Robby McClain in the Gillette area. It was a very unusual rack, as it had two beams coming out of one side and another out the other side of his head.

Manitowoc Rifle & Pistol Club plans deer hunters’ sight-ins

Manitowoc Rifle & Pistol Club will hold its 2023 deer hunters’ sight-ins at the club, 7227 Sandy Hill Lane, Two Rivers, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Oct. 28-29 and Nov. 4-5.

To get to the club, take State 42 north of Two Rivers, then east on Viceroy Road and north on Sandy Hill Lane. Register at the clubhouse when you arrive. Cost is $5 per participant. Eye and hearing protection is available, if needed.

Supervised 25-yard, 50-yard and 100-yard ranges are available. Range stations are sheltered from the weather with a spotter at each station. Lunch is available inside the clubhouse.

The club notes that unlike past years, there will be no sight-in the weekend before the season begins.

Kettle Range Snow Riders plan fall fish fry

Kettle Range Snow Riders will hold their fall fish fry 4:30-8 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Mishicot Vet’s Club.

They will be serving hand-breaded perch and walleye, cod and chicken strips. Desserts are also available.

Maribel club’s gun sight-ins are Oct. 28-29 and Nov. 4-5

Maribel Sportsman’s Club will hold gun sight-ins from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 28-29 and Nov. 4-5.

Cost is $5 per gun, which includes targets, sight-in help and some minor gunsmithing.

The club is next to Interstate 43, exit 164, State 147, Maribel.

Viking Bow & Gun Club plans rummage sale and sight-ins

Viking Bow & Gun Club, 13431 Rusch Road, Valders, will hold its sportsmen’s rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 4.

Tables are on a first come, first served basis, and are limited to one table per person.

Set-up is from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 3, or starting at 7 a.m. Nov. 4.

They also have gun sight-ins from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Nov. 4 and 5. The sight-in is open to the public and a small range fee will be charged.

Maribel club shares fall trap league results

Maribel Sportsman’s Club wrapped up its fall trap league. Here are the results:

• In Division I, first place went to Ripley’s Bar and Grill with McCoy Krish being high gun with a 22.17 average. Second place went to Chuck’s Team with Morgan Brice being high gun with a 20.75 average. Third place went to Schug Financial with Tom Staskal being high gun with a 22.14 average.
• In Division II, first place went to Scared Hitless with John Strauss being high gun with a 22.88 average. Second place went to Gordy’s with Mark Vanderkelen being high gun with a 20.13 average. Third place went to That Lil Bit with Austin Lazor being high gun with a 19.94 average.
• Other teams shooting in the league include Swinging and Missing with Scott Paquette being high gun with a 21.00 average, Team Effort with Dylan Abts being high gun with a 18.57 average, Fisherville with Mark Hutterer being high gun with a 21.75 average, Lakeshore Heating with Chris Stenzel being high gun with a 20.92 average, and Team Click with Lucas Griffey being high gun with a 21.75 average.
• Overall league top shooter was John Strauss with his 22.88 average.
