Winnebago System Sturgeon Spearing, Day 13

Winnebago System Sturgeon Spearing

There were 10 sturgeon registered from Lake Winnebago today including 1 fish that was larger than 100 pounds.  Each of the 5 registration stations that are still operating registered at least one fish today.  The largest fish of the day was 128.5 pounds (78.5”) and registered at Wendt’s by Linda Muche of Van Dyne.  Today’s vignette includes a photo of all of the fish that were harvested today.  A more detailed breakdown of today’s harvest can be viewed through the link below.

Today’s Vignette: “2019 Perseverance Award Winners”

Today I’d like to recognize some of the dedicated spearers that found success late in the 2019 sturgeon spearing season.  It may be common sense, but spearers can’t spear a fish sitting at home or while at work.  They have to be on the ice looking down the hole and the more time spent on the ice only increases the odds of filling a tag.  Today marks the 13th day of the spearing season and effort has certainly diminished relative to opening weekend and the 2nd weekend of the season.  However, there are still many spearers that went out today. Most of these folks are people who have been on the ice most days during the season and are dedicated to the sport.  That perseverance paid off for the spearers highlighted in today’s report, and I would venture to say that most of these spearers have found success more often than the average license holder.
