Winnebago System Sturgeon Spearing, Day 12

Winnebago System Sturgeon Spearing

Only 4 days remain in the 2019 sturgeon spear fishery on Lake Winnebago.  There were 13 sturgeon registered today with Stockbridge Harbor leading the way with 5 fish, followed by Waverly Beach (3), Calumet Harbor (2), Payne’s Point (2) and Wendt’s (1).  Todays harvest brings the season total to 373 fish from Lake Winnebago and 680 fish registered from the entire Winnebago System.  The largest fish of the day was registered at Waverly Beach by Gregory Radtke of Weyauwega.  A more detailed breakdown of today’s harvest along with a photo of Gregory and his fish can be veiewed through the following links:

Good luck to all spearers during the remainder of the season!

Today’s Vignette: “The 2018 Chironomid (redworm) Assessment Report”

Yesterday’s vignette described results from the diet work that was completed during the 2019 sturgeon spearing season.  In that vignette, I mentioned that the DNR conducts annual assessments to monitor the relative abundance for gizzard shad and Chironomid lake fly larvae (redworms).  Today’s vignette describes the results of the sampling that the DNR fisheries program does each year to assess the Chironomid population within Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes.
