Winter camping is some kind of wonderful. Think quiet parks, ultra cozy campfires and unique experiences you just can’t have in the warmer months, like frozen waterfalls and snow-covered Lake Michigan dunes.

And you have plenty of Wisconsin destinations to choose from, as more than 20 of our state properties offer camping in the winter.

Find tips on packing, booking and cooking for off-season camping in the winter issue of Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine.

OutWiGo For Free Fishing Weekend

Whether you’re an experienced angler or someone casting a line for the first time, mark your calendars for Free Fishing Weekend, Jan. 21-22. No fishing license or trout and salmon stamps are required.

Anglers can fish state waters where there is an open season, both on the ice or from shore. All other fishing regulations apply, such as limits on the number and size of fish you can keep and any seasons when you must release certain fish species.

As a reminder, anglers cannot fish spring trout ponds during the Winter Free Fishing Weekend. Please review the trout regulations and 2022-2023 Hook and Line regulations for more information.

If you plan to keep your catch, be sure to review the DNR’s Safe Eating Guidelines to stay informed of potential consumption advisories impacting some waterbodies throughout the state.
