Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 5717, the Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety Act. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.

Representative Henry (Hank) Johnson (D-GA) introduced H.R. 5717 on January 30, 2020. This legislation would ban the purchase and possession of semi-automatic firearms, standard capacity magazines, and suppressors. The bill would require an individual to obtain a license in order to purchase or possess any firearm or ammunition and raises the minimum age to 21. The bill would also create a one-gun-a-month limitation and add additional taxes on guns and gun-related equipment. In addition, the legislation would allow states to regulate private sales of firearms and ammunition, including background checks for private sales. Further, the bill would implement national “red flag” laws and expand “gun free zones.” H.R. 5717 was referred to the House Judiciary Committee for further consideration.

As your member of Congress, I am committed to defending your constitutional rights. This includes your right to bear arms as guaranteed under the 2nd Amendment. Millions of Americans cherish their constitutional right to own and use firearms. I have consistently cosponsored and supported legislation to ensure that law abiding citizens have the ability to exercise their rights granted to them under the Constitution. As Democratic leadership pushes to promote legislation limiting this constitutional right, I will be sure to continue my efforts to protect the 2nd Amendment. It is an honor and a privilege to fight for your 2nd Amendment rights in Congress. I will keep your thoughts in mind should H.R. 5717 or similar legislation be considered on the House floor.

Thank you again for contacting me. Representing you in Congress is an honor and I appreciate hearing from you. Should you have other concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out. To stay up-to-date on my work in Washington, I invite you to sign up for my newsletter by visiting my website at www.grothman.house.gov, and following me on Twitter (@RepGrothman) and Facebook (Congressman Glenn Grothman).
