Fishing Report for 6-20-2019 from the DNR

Manitowoc County

  • Manitowoc Shore/Piers: There has been very little activity from shore and pier fishermen and no fish have been recorded. Manitowoc Ramp: There was very little fishing pressure during the week. This changed a bit on Saturday, as anglers were out and had moderate success. 4 out of 6 boats that were interviewed had caught Chinook Salmon. The number of fish caught per boat was pretty low, as water temperatures are still continuing to warm. This ranged anywhere from 0-4 fish per boat. Water temperatures reported were fairly consistent, the surface being 50-52 degrees Fahrenheit and 100 feet down being anywhere from 45-51 degrees Fahrenheit. Baits used were consistent across the board as flasher flies and spoons were being used with the intention of catching mostly Salmon.
  • Two Rivers Shore/Piers: There has been very little activity from shore and pier fishermen and no fish have been recorded.
  • Two Rivers Ramp: There was very little fishing pressure during the week. This changed a bit on Saturday, as anglers were out and had moderate success. 5 out of 7 boats there were interviewed had caught Chinook Salmon. The number of fish caught per boat ranged anywhere from 0-8 fish per boat. Anglers fishing out of Two Rivers had a slightly better success rate as well as the number of fish caught per boat. Water temperatures reported were fairly consistent, the surface being 51 degrees Fahrenheit, 30 feet down being 51-52 degrees, and 50 feet down being 43 degrees. Flasher flies and spoons were being used with the intention of catching mostly Salmon. One group of anglers had reported that fish were hitting earlier in the morning compared to the early afternoon.

Door County

  • Northern Door County Lakeside: This week there was very little fishing pressure due to the rainy and windy weather conditions that occured. A few anglers were going out of Bailey’s Harbor, however I was unable to conduct any interviews. The forecast for this coming week appears to have little chance of rain and temps look to be trending up. Hopefully with the warmer temps the fishing will increase and so will the success rate. The one boat I talked to fishing for smallmouth bass out of Rowley’s Bay had a decent day. Most of their fish came south of Rowley’s bay. The angler said the bass they caught were mostly post spawn fish.
  • Northern Door County Bayside: The fishing pressure was higher along the bay this week than the lake partially because of the wind direction. The anglers fishing for smallmouth bass in boats had a slow week. The few anglers I talked to came in with less than 5 fish per boat. According to the anglers the majority of the bass caught on this bay this week were pre-spawn fish. The water temp between Ephraim and Sister Bay ranged between 53-58 degrees. Shore fishing in Ephraim is still producing some smallmouth bass, with majority of fish being caught on minnows. A couple smallmouth bass were caught in Ellison Bay from shore using worms as well. There is still no word on any perch being caught in Northern Door Co.
  • Chaudoirs Dock: Use at this site also declined significantly due to wind and rain, only traffic observed was late in the week in the afternoon. Anglers targeting Walleye had low success
  • Sawyer Harbor: Potawatomi State Park showed low traffic with either few or no anglers launching throughout the week. Those who were interviewed had low success targeting bass.
  • Little Sturgeon Bay: The Carmody launch had low numbers this week. The only angling party observed to be commercial. Riley’s bay access showed very low use with no angler success reported.
  • Sturgeon Bay: Fishing pressure was moderate this week, several people had good success targeting smallmouth. Fishing parties out of the city ramp and stone quarry ramp specifically had high success. Many smallmouth caught were with dark colored soft plastics, jerkbaits, and hair jigs. Quality fish were caught this week, with some weighing up to five pounds. There are still reports of some smallmouth being on beds in six to eight feet of water, while others are transitioning into post-spawn. A few parties interviewed caught 20-25 smallmouth during one trip, with many of them being higher quality fish, so the smallmouth bite is definitely hot right now.

Kewaunee County

  • Kewaunee: There was low fishing pressure this week, No parties interviewed landed any fish. Water temperature is 50 degrees on the surface in several locations. The water level has been continuing to rise which has covered more of the public boat landing.
  • Algoma: The fishing pressure was low this week, water temperatures are still in the upper 40’s to 50 degrees surface temperature. No reports of any fish being caught from any of the parties interviewed. Hopefully within the next week or so if the weather conditions are favorable, the salmon fishing should start to pickup.

Fox River and Green Bay Creel Report: June 17, 2019

Fox River

  • The usage of the fairgrounds and foxpoint has been slow. On average only 2 to 5 boats per site during the week. Most of the boats didn’t have much luck catching anything they were targeting. The walleye anglers said it was very slow on average 0 to 1 only being caught. The musky anglers were not having much success either. There hasn’t been much for shore fishing from Voyager. The few that have been fishing have been catching sheepshead, white bass, and a few smallmouth bass. At the fairgrounds early in the week there were some shore anglers. There were having luck catching carp, channel catfish, sheepshead, and white bass.

Oconto County

  • Walleye fishing was slow this week even with decent angler numbers seen at Pensaukee, Oconto, and Oconto Park II launches. Most boats were getting zero to 4 walleyes with incidental catches of sheepshead, catfish, and perch. Shore anglers were having similar results on the Oconto River and at Oconto Park II with sheepshead and small perch being caught.
  • Geano Beach: This launch has been just like Suamico, with it being slow for usage and only a few walleye were caught. On June 9th one fisherman did have some success for perch. He ended up with 6 and the largest one was 16 inches. The walleye fisherman have been catching the few on shad raps while trolling. On Saturday the 15th the weather wasn’t the best and that limited 1 angler to venture out from this launch during my shift. I didn’t see anybody fishing from shore from this location.

Brown County

  • Duck Creek, Longtail Point: During my shifts I only encountered a couple shore anglers at these sites. They didn’t have any luck catching anything. The only people launching off these sites were kayakers.
  • Suamico: The usage of this launch has been slow especially during the week. On Saturday the weather wasn’t the best, so only 3 boats were using the launch. The shore fishing from this site has been slow as well with only a couple people fishing. The people fishing from shore haven’t had any luck with catching anything. While the people who have boats have been catching a few walleye, on average 1 to 2 only. That is the same for smallmouth bass only a few were being caught. Trolling with flicker shad has been the favorite for the walleye. A few northern have been caught as well while trolling for walleye.
  • Bayshore Park: There was low boater traffic, only anglers seen were a handful shore angling in the protected piers during windy weather. Red River access was not used to launch.

Marinette County

  • Slow fishing for walleyes on the Menominee River and the bay with a few walleyes caught out of the Peshtigo River. Anglers fishing off the piers of the Menominee River were having good luck with catfish and sheepshead with a few bass also caught. Alewife were reported to be seen throughout the area with bay anglers reporting seeing a small die off this weekend along with schools swimming around the piers and mouths of the rivers.
