Donation increases rare Door County boreal forest and other news about public lands that belong to you

Sept. 28 is National Public Lands Day and there is no better time to explore and help care for the public lands that belong to you. More than 6 million acres in Wisconsin are managed on your behalf by county, local, state, and federal governments.

DNR’s Natural Heritage Conservation staff are proud to care for hundreds of State Natural Areas that protect the very best of Wisconsin’s native landscapes, including colorful prairies, old-growth forests, wild lakes and sugar maple woods. These lands are known to support 90% of the plant species and 75% of the animal species on our endangered and threatened list.

You’ll find unparalleled beauty and natural treasures when you visit these sites; plan ahead because unlike state parks, they do not have picnic tables, restrooms, and formally designated trails.

On this day and others, we invite you to:

  • Read more on the natural and geological history of your newest public lands
  • Follow links to 12 state natural areas with fantastic fall color and more
  • Meet Mary Kay Baum, your State Natural Area Steward of 2019
  • Check out and chip in at a volunteer work day near you.
