Description:

We are seeking an individual with the talent, passion and desire to promote and grow the Backcountry Hunters & Anglers mission in addition to engaging in local conservation issues. The annual giving and grants coordinator is charged with strategically developing and managing robust cultivation and stewardship programs for all donors and foundations for the annual giving and grant program, specifically for strategically developing and managing a robust solicitation program for annual fund donors and new foundations. The coordinator will be responsible for exercising independent judgment to achieve annual fund gift and grants revenue goals.

The ideal candidate must be able to work with little supervision and be flexible and organized in a fast-paced work environment. This position requires the ability to exercise good judgment, make responsible decisions, analyze problems, evaluate strategies, accurately document activities, prepare timely and complete reports, adhere to standards of confidentiality and communicate effectively.

Primary Responsibilities:

The annual giving and grants coordinator will engage in the following:

Grants:

  • research and identify new funding opportunities aligned to operating and program budgets;
  • write, develop and edit grant letters of inquiry and proposals;
  • track, compile and submit grant reports and deliverables;
  • work directly with program directors to understand program and organizational goals, deliverables and analysis of outcomes for proposals and compliance to grant requirements;
  • maintain a grant calendar that includes deadlines for applications and reports by updating grant tracking in word, excel, paper files and/or CRM database;
  • maintain strong and positive relationships with funders (phone calls, meetings, updates);
  • develop an annual grants strategy as part of a broader development plan.

Annual Giving:

  • develop and implement a comprehensive annual giving plan and calendar;
  • create and implement an overall annual giving strategy and establish short- and long-term fundraising goals for the program;
  • manage the online, matching and other giving program to increase annual participation;
  • create personalized letters for the top 10-20 percent potential donors;
  • serve as the knowledge expert to build and execute strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and growth of annual fund gifts, to include developing a portfolio of current and prospective donors with identified revenue and growth goals by measurement of meaningful interactions (phone and email conversations, cultivation and stewardship mailings, etc.) and solicitations;
  • use independent judgement to develop meaningful ways to engage giving society donors and prospects through cultivation, stewardship and engagement in events and volunteer opportunities with the goal of growing membership and annual giving revenue;
  • create and lead successful and comprehensive annual giving programs;
  • perform other duties as determined by the senior staff or the president/CEO.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • an innovative and a creative thinker with a proven success of following through with ideas;
  • at least three years of fundraising, grant writing and donor relations experience;
  • strong communication and organizational skills;
  • demonstrated experience working with funders, donors and program staff;
  • knowledge of the non-profit sector;
  • ability to meet deadlines;
  • preferably a hunter and/or angler, willing to work flexible hours;
  • conducts work with integrity, good humor and a focus on developing partnerships, building trust and strengthening professional relationships;
  • a bachelor’s degree;
  • demonstrated ability to work with and interact with sportsmen and women and a general knowledge of current and historical public land and water conservation issues, hunting, fishing, economics and the current political landscape;
  • belief in and commitment to BHA’s work and mission;
  • must be able to lift 25 pounds and have a valid driver’s license.

Starting Salary: Dependent on experience
